2006 October 27 - Nov 4 Czech Republic

October 27. Vienna – Cezky Krymlov.
Our car was VW golf, compact 4 door car with manual transmission. As a matter of fact, this time we noticed that many people including our colleague in Budapest and our friends in Vienna were driving automatic. One taxi driver in Paris drove automatic too. We were told that better cars now come in automatic and Europeans started to like to drive manual especially in traffic. George loves manual so we got one – less expensive. It was hard to get our out from Vienna center, but after driving in circles J for an some time, we got out and were on the way to Czech republic for Cezky Krymlov. We crossed the border in 2 hours – 1 more stamp on passports. We arrived Czecky Krymlov . We checked in at our hotel, 5* Ruze. http://www.hotelruze.cz/ .
This is the best hotel in Cezky Krymlov but besides being luxury 5* hotel, it has character. It compares with paradors in Spain and Posadas in Portugal. It used to be a Jesuit monastery in 16C and it is more like a museum.
People just come in to sightsee it. It is not for everybody since it is not modern, and room was typical room in tower with a small window as in turret and what a view – a river and a castle! The hotel is meticulously restored and is an experience in itself.

As for Cezky Krymlov, Unesco Historic Heritage site and second most visited town in Czech republic, it is a monument of Renaissance and Baroque art. It is such a fairy tale place…. It has castle above Vltava river, gardens, delightful small cobblestone streets, nice gardens and very well preserved Baroque theater. This is something like Rothenburg in Germany or Gruyers in Switzerland or St. Paul de Vence in France. We enjoyed stroll in town , had dinner .

I am better with Czech language since it is Slavic and I speak Russian and Ukrainian. Czech has many common words . Austria was easy – we knew some plus Austrians speak English. Hungary was the most difficult to understand.
So we finally arrived in a country where it is easy to understand and being understood. Plus if not English, they speak Russian. Money are difficult to understand, 1:20 Czech Crone. They do not have euros yet. But some accept euro unofficially.

October 28. After breakfast we did some more sightseeing, took pictures and left Cezky Krymlov for spa town Karlovy Vary.
Karlovy Vary has 600 year of summer resort tradition , was founded in 1350 by Karl IV. It is popular for mineral waters. Many Europeans come to drink curative waters and take baths. My mother used to go there for 4 weeks treatment and told me to drink water. We checked into grandhotel Pupp ,
It was really grand, what a contrast with yesterday’s hotel Ruze! From Jesuit convent, to grand Palace. It really reminds grand palaces in France, Germany and Austria. We were lucky to be upgraded to jr suite with 1,5 bathrooms and living room and bedroom. About 5 meters ceilings, huge windows, beautiful silk wallpaper.

Many famous people stayed there from Goethe and emperor Franz Joseph to Gorbachev and American movie stars. What a history this hotel has! http://www.pupp.cz/

We went for a promenade. I was looking for a place where people drink water. We went to colonnade. I asked a vendor on the street “Where is water?”. He seemed to be frustrated by such a stupid question: “Water, water, everywhere is water!! “. There was a stream of water like a river, and it was steaming. There was also fountain of hot water and also small fountains where people were filling with special porcelain cups with pout and drinking from it. I bought a cup and tried the water. It was strange tasting – warm, salty tasting , something like warm saltwater. Not for me. Not sure what is the hype with this water. I neither felt better nor worse J .
The stores on main street had beautiful porcelain and glass. Bohemian crystal and local Moser porcelain are the things to buy.

We went to the hotel’s roman bath. It is actually just a Jacuzzi, although there is a myriad of different treatments and rooms – sauna, massages, hot and cold baths with stones for feet massage.

We considered ourselves experienced after Budapest spas. J
It was coed and women and men change in their respective lockers and come out to roman bath area. I came out to Jacuzzi. George came too. When I came into Jacuzzi , 2 men left it. I noticed they were naked. George came in… I explained there were naked Russian men. I know Baden Baden in Germany is code clothes optional but this was not supposed to be. At this moment since I was the only one woman in the spa and men fled, the only logical conclusion was that I am in wrong spa? We both were wondering. Fortunately, a young german couple came in and they were in swimming suites. So we concluded even it is coed spa, it is allowed to be without clothes. So we stayed. Not an issue for us but something to have in mind – usually Americans do not appreciate taking spa with people without clothes so my job is to warn .

We went for dinner afterwards at hotel Grand Pupp restaurant. It was a beautiful dining room. Less expensive is buffet all you can eat – popular with Russians who take half board plan. We opted for a la carte. The dinner was exquisite and service was excellent. It was great people watching too. Guests were some Americans – very few. Majority was Russians and Germans.
Staff is fluent in 3 languages. Great people watching .

October 29.
My cousin Ella and her boyfriend Klaus came from Germany for a day and we spent half of the day with them – drinking water, strolling and we had lunch. A lot’s of food so did not have dinner. After they drove back, we had some work to do. We sure getting used to 2 rooms and 2 baths! Enjoying this hotel very much, great service.

October 30. We drove after breakfast to Prague, getting to Prague was easy but inside Prague it was like driving in labirinth. All directions did not prepare us for narrow one way medieval streets and trams. Finally made to our hotel Oriental Mandarin
http://www.mandarinoriental.com/prague/
As all Oriental hotels, this one is excellent. Location is Mala Strana (Little quarter). It is built in convent but hotel is brand new, opened Sept 12. It is contemporary design inside however they preserved the structure of old convent, we have a large room with few steps in hallway. Hardwood floors and heated marble tile in bath.. It is only first day but we are enjoying hotel very much. I checked spa, very nice, but who has time for this... In spa, there are also remains of roman ruins preserved and glass floor is built on top of it...
Staff is young and anxious to please. We went to ballet to see Swan Lake at State Opera theater . It was fine, but after Vienna theater is pales in comparison.

October 31st. Happy Haloween! Actually, you can see some pumpkins at the windows of building. We went to Old town and dropped off the car. We are getting the hang of it. Even car driver yesterday who drove us from Opera said it is very difficult to drive in the town. In any case, we are free from the car so we started our pedestrian sightseeing :-)
Old town square was very busy. We went to Tyn gothic church and it was nice however the problem is beacause of traveling after 2 weeks, you got lazy on sightseeing. At this point, after seeing so many churches and museums, we got bored with churches. One more church.... :-)
Same with astronomic clock. It was brief show, we've seen this before.. We passed by horse carriage offers and touring in vintage cars and made a point to come back next day. At this point we like to stroll, and enjoy city and watch people. We watched 2 American young women taking pictures of each other. They had few scarves, beret and they skillfully changed their appearance with accessories and took different pictures of each other with different looking clothes. Amazing .
On Charles (Karlov) bridge as usual were too many people especially groups so it was crowded. No chance to touch figure which brings luck. Tomorrow we have a private guide in the morning so we saved some energy and left the best for Jewish quarter. I am glad that we are staying in Mala Strana, it is such quiet and refined quarter within embassies and still in walking distance to old town. Lunch was quick pizza and greek salad (too much of Czech food already). We had some break at hotel and had a nice dinner at nearby restaurant "U Modre Kachniki" . Good Czech food...

Nov 1st. Most of the day was spent with a guide. Our guide Jirina was excellent and getting a private guide, even if we are familiar in city in general, still gives completely different perspective for traveler. Besides general seeing of the sites, she also discussed with us (beacuse we were interested in it), Czech history, politics and life under Soviets. She appreciated also the fact that we know European history and understand what it was like living under Soviets.
We walked in Prague's beautiful castle district . We took tram there and metro back. It is possible to walk from the Old town and Mala Strana however we saved energy and time. We also wanted to ride that Czech metro and tram again beacuse we grew up with this transportation in Soviet Union. Nostalgic. Same exported Czech trams. I have a picture of it.
When we walked by president's residence, it looked familiar to us. We remembered driving by it past checkpoint ("controla") on day of arrival, when we were looking for our hotel and got a lost a bit. The policement at checkpoint told us we cannot come here but we did not understand why. We did talk him into letting us at least make an u-turn which was about 50 meters along the building and then to turn around. He gave up. Now it turned to be - it was restricted zone reserved for president of Czech republic. Wow! Try to drive into White house entrance.

After Castle district we went to Jewish quarter and toured synagogues and cemetery. Cemetery is amazing. You need to look into gravestones and look for family signs which shows family name and occupation (doctors, finance, etc). Again, I strongly recommend a guide beacuse even if you read Hebrew, depending on light, you will not see some interesting signs on graves.

Our guide was also helpful in explaining how the czech glass is made and showed us local stones - granates and moldavites. Good for souvenirs. She did not push selling. She showed us marvelous shop with armor and tin figures... Very interesting. She also helped me to scout free informative tourist maps which I could not get at tourist information. All TI offices gave me at least 1 map but I need many to bring for my clients. So I loaded on maps. She showed us where Cedok travel agency in located so tomorrow we will go to buy tickets. I might splurge for assigned seats this time.

Tired, we got back to hotel . It was cold and windy. Warm hotel was welcoming and staff opened the doors for us greeting us by name. George rested in the afternoon and I had a business meeting with Oriental sales manager. The hotel is impressive and while is only one month old, is getting many inquiries and showing from industry suppliers. Later on I had another meeting with a lovely Russian woman whom I work already for 5 years for central europe booking abd later on George and I went for dinner with her. Dinner was at hotel's Asian fusion restaurant and it was good although our collegaue was shocked about prices Americans pay at this restaurant. No more than in NYC so we did not think it was that much. She gave me though some other recommendations for dinner so we will try them for next few days.

Nov 2. Today we went to to Terezin concentration camp. It is a sombering experience. It is a fortification town created by Franz Joseph emperor in 1780 as a fortifed town named after Empress Maria Teresa for purpose to keep prussians out of Austro-Hungarian empire. In 1941, the Nazis removed their residents and brought in 60,000 Jews creating Terezin concentration camp. This was nazi's model Jewish town, a concentration camp for propaganda purposes. Red cross came to see it and Nazis demostrated how "citizens" seems to thrive , put on plays, concerts, soccer matches. Red Cross did not raise extra questions , although it was obvious that propaganda was all lies. But red Cross delegation was lead by Swiss doctor and Swiss had Jewish money at their accounts. Virtually all of Terezin Jews ended up dying either at Terezin or were sent to next concentration camps (Aushwitz, Mauthauzen, etc..) The art of of children of Terezin survived as a testimony to the cruel horror of Holocaust.

In the evening we had dinner in old town, in the Balkan restaurant was recommended yesterday to us by my collegaue. It was good and surpisingly inexpensive.
Nov 2 . We took easy that day, mostly exploring our neigborhood mala strana. We took funicular to Petrin hill and enjoyed view from summit. There is a copy of Eiffel tower, 90 meters tall.
In the afternoon, we had tickets to the concert of Mozart's music - Mozartissimo. It was surprisingly good. Much better performances that ballet in State Opera. Mozartsissimo was in theater of the estates. I booked tickets in advance for both performances in Prague at bohemiatickets.cz and asked for best tickets. We got first row, and in the middle in both . Best seats. After theater, we had a dinner at nice restaurant near our hotel, U Vladaru.

Tomorrow we are leaving for Dresden. Prague was very enjoyable.

2006 October trip 24-27 Austria, Vienna

Otober 24. After excitement of yesterday, this morning was quiet. We got taxi to train station for our next destination to Vienna. Streets were everywhere a mess and the cleanup started. We went to buy tickets on the train, We decided to economize on our tickets since 2nd class is also nonsmoking and acceptable. We did not even bought seats reservation, figuring that we should find a seat. True, there were plenty of seats available and tickets without seat res cost us $60 for 2. That's about 50% off from Rail Europe. We talked to a gentleman from Canada who is dual Canadian and Hungarian citizen. He lives in summer in Hungary. He complained also on Hungarian parlament. Said they are not better that Soviets. The time passed quickly in in 3 hours we were in Vienna.

We checked in in our hotel Bristol. Member of Starwood luxury collection. Historic hotel but after Le Meridien I am rather leaning towards to modern hotels. The rooms is not that small but furnishing is antique and very ornate We have however a nice balcony facing opera! Pretty. We are next to Opera theater . This is the best address in Vienna. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/luxury/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=89 We called our old time neighbors who live in Vienna and they said will come tomorrow to hotel to spend a day with us. We went outside. The rain started so we opted for "tour" by tram. There are 2 trams on the ring route so we jumped on the train and rode two circles and passed most cites in center to get us oriented. We lived in Vienna 24 years ago for few weeks before coming to USA but we did not see everything we can afford now ;-) . So we went on pedestiran street towards St. Stephen cathedral.

After some sightseeing in center, we had a dinner in a nice local restaurant – Vienna schnitzel and salad and beer. It was very good. We had time to refresh and change for opera. We crossed the road to the opera and enjoyed our evening at the opera – Verdi’s Rigoletto.

October 25.

Our friends came to get us at hotel and we went to their apartment in Vienna. We had great time catching up. We did not see them for 24 years. It was very nice that we still connected and also we got a chance to see and talk to Vienna residents.

We took tram back to the center and enjoyed walk in the evening. There were a lot of people strolling and illuminated buildings were very pretty. Opera broadcasted premiere of Othello to the pubic outside. You can sit on free chairs and listen and buy coffee /hot chocolate/tea. We listened for a while – great time spent and walked to Hofburg Palace. After that I had to try famous Sacher torte at café in Sacher Hotel and tea. It was not that great as I was looking forward to and heard about it but I had to try. Maybe it was because we were still full from dinner.

October 26 was an independence day in Austria celebrating Russians leaving the country After ten years of occupation – 1945-1955.

There was military parade with an orchestra and tanks and helicopters displayed at Rathaus. I particularly liked gothic Rathaus but because of holiday it was closed. All other sites were open and free for the public. It was festive athmosphere. We are glad that we this is second country we are participating in the festivities. We hope it will be without turbulent protest we witnessed in Budapest and it seemeds like Austrians got it under control. J

We went to Parliament to see it and also went to nearby Epstein mansion to see how Austrian aristocrats lived.

Dinner was second day with our Vienna friends.

October 27. We picked up rental car in the morning and left Vienna for our next destination – Czech republic.

2006 Oct Europe trip - Budapest Oct 20 - 24

October 21 We are in Budapest now.
Yesterday we left Paris in the evening on Sky Europe. Budget airline. No first class, pay for food. Like Jet blue, 3+3 seats. But they were on time and prompt. Flew this time from Orly, smaller airport and more manageable then CDG. Closer to paris as well. Arrived Budapest around 11pm, got taxi (need to reserve in advance because a lots of scam rip-off taxis) and taxi driver was waiting for us. Did not speak English but with few words, he got us in the car and in about 30 mins we get to hotel. The driver was driving fast on narrow 2 lines parkway and glancing on TV :-)
He also had GPS but yes, he had a TV and was looking at some soap opera.
Anyway looks like he had in car under control and got us to Le Meridien around 11:30pm or in European hours 23:30.
Le Meridien http://www.starwoodhotels.com/lemeridien/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1861
it is relatively new hotel , 5*, member of LHW , the room is terrific. This hotel looks very classy and luxurious. Bathroom is terrific. Le Meridien is part of Starwood now and have these heavenly beds. Room is very nice and large, high ceilings. What a refresher from that crumpy mansion in Paris. But service and concierge in Paris Westminster hotel was nice.
I hope Budapest will not dissapoint after Paris. Not sure where we are.. I admit I did not do research on Budapest enough. I think we are away from tourist center Vaci Utca but we are in fashionable district whatever it means.
In the morning George slept and I went outside change money and orient. This country is going to be more difficult. The language is not familiar. We can get by in France since we can understand some word and say some neccessary word. We speak Russian and some words are Universal in both Russian and French. Hungarian is neither slav nor germanic, it is related to Finnish and Estonian. Hard to read and understand. In addition to language, money are in forinths, not in euro. Older people do speak Russian however it brings unpleasant memories being them under communism so I better not use it here. They like Americans though... Some younger people speak english

Now $100 buy you 20,740 HUF. Very confusing . I went outside to change money. I counted and counted... Concierge showed me where we are and where we can walk from here. Next I went to scout for food. After staying in dancy opera district where were not too many local neigborhood food stores, I was delighted that across the park in Le Meridien there was supermarket. I went there to get brunch food. Since our trip is long it is neither economically nor healthy eat large meals at hotel so we try to eat not formal and sample local delicasy. I bought fresh bread, brie cheese, salamis and some very tasty hungarian cold cuts, some fruit, yougurt, ice cream and water. Good thing we have coffee and tea set in the room . This shopping cost me approx $10 (I will spare you conversion). Cont breakfast at hotel cost $20 usd per person. It indeed took some effort to figure out what to buy and how to pay (most shoppers and salespeople did not speak English or very little) but this is an experience we are going to Europe for... I found out that shopping plastic bags are not coming automatically free , you have to ask for it and it cost 6c. I bought it.

We went to Czecheyni baths and soaked in thermal waters. The pools were outside, 38C (100F) so it is warm even in autumn weather. It was very nice. The water supposedly cure from different kind of joint and other deceases. We'll see later but it feels very good. We walked on a the Andrassy boulevard - designated Unesco site. Nice mansions, emabassies , wide boulevard like in Paris.
Too tired to go outside so we ate in hotel's restaurant which turned out to best French restaurant in town. Comparing to Paris, it is not expensive at all.

October 22.

My partner tour operator in Budapest Otto came in today and we had business meeting. Later on his guide came in and Otto and guide Gabi gave us a tour of the city. We went to synagogue , Castle Hill and other sites in Buda ,very beautiful. It was very crowded - too many police in the city and Otto suggested we go to Sztendre, pictureseque Cerbian village outside of city.

Looks like we are in the middle of commemoration event. Today are the latest preparation and dignitaries are arriving today.. First it was exciting for us but our guides arrived today and they are not happy with all traffic restrictions. We modified our sightseeing a bit beacuse of it. We did see synagogue, it is beautiful but looks more like church with moorish architecture but not like synagogue. We went to Buda sights, medieval castle and fishermen bastion and royal palace. Nice views. We went to Cerbian village Sztendre and and had lunch there.

On the way back it was not even possible to walk, not saying about parking. Our hotel is in central location but looks like everyone arrived at hotel and near is British embassy so some big shots were supposed to drive there. In addition some foreign dignitaries staying at our hotels so there are a lot's of cops and secret agent looking types. We had to wait until we will be allowed to walk into our lobby. Today there are lot's of commemoration events. Tomorrow there will be military parade and flag raising ceremony at parlament square. The waving flags everywhere have a hole in them in the middle symbolizing shooting by soviets by hungarian people.

Since we spent all day today with our guides, we heard a lot about revolution. The best way to learn culture and history of other people.

Tomorrow state dignitaries will place flowers of respect at the status of Imre Nagy. The former democratically elected reformist prime minister Imre Nagy was ousted by Kremlin backed Hungarian Workers Party. When uprising started, he was restored as prime minister and he asked Soviets to leave. He became in head of the government. When Soviets crushed uprizing Imre Nagy fled to Yugoslavian embassy but he was given away, transferred to Romania (he thought he escaped but he did not ). Lately he was transported back to Hungary and executed. So he is a national hero.

These are really interesting days and even though we are having issues to move around, it is still exciting to participate in events.

In the evening, The state dignitaries arrived with their motorcades and there were a lot's of police and plainclothes security. The police and security really got annoying since they made tourists wait until they roll out red carpet for some neigboring countries (Serbia, Croatia, etc. royalties and government officials from UK and other European countries.).
In addition, they disconnected internet so this really got us upset. We could not get out of hotel so we went to wellness center . Great pool, jacuzzi, finnish sauna and eucalyptus steam bath. After that we were too relaxed so we again ate at hotel's restaurant. We love our waiters - second day in the row. They gave us the same table....

October 23.
Had breakfast at hotel and walked in the city, today is anniversary - 50's commemoration and there are many exhibits around city. Most stores are closed. We walked and saw 3 synagogues from outside and crossed the bridge to Pest. Went to Gellert bath and soaked there. I liked Zceheny bath better. Gellert is historic hotel and baths are imposing. It was a bit confusing where to change, where to go. There are turkish baths (single sex, no clothes) and thermal pool (coed). I looked at turkish baths. Just women in steam bath and showers. I am not thin but comparing with these bodies really boosted my ego :-)
Attendants are surly but they still direct visitors where to go (massage, turkish bath, pool, etc). They told me towel will be provided later at the pool. So, I went to pool, George made there too.
There were 2 pools - one is for swimming and another for soaking - hot water. I went for swimming, it was large pool. It was strange since everyone was swimming in one direction counterclockwise. I am not a strong swimmer so I swim short lapses. I turned around and looked like I was the only one swimming wrong way. One person bumped into me but continued to swim without apologizing. I think this is leftover from communist regime - everyone swims same direction. Weird. George was laughing.
Then I realized that I need towel. I went to get towel and surly woman said it cost 9,700HUF deposit. I did not have that much money so I tried to give her euro - this is for deposit only for god sake. NO. I said forget it and went back to lockers area where I saw sheets for free. I observed that people were not taking towels to the pool but found a minute when attendants were busy and grabbed two sheets. I walked quickly with 2 sheets and I heard them screaming at me in Hungarian something. I glanced over shoulder and walked faster. She showed me sign in English "please do not take sheets to the thermal pool". I replied in Russian that I do not understand English :-)
So I made to the pool with stolen sheets and the rest was uneventful.
We finished soaking . As I said, Zceheny baths were better . But still we gald we went to both. We walked back via another bridge and strolled pedestrian area Vaci Utca. Many stores, restaurants. It went through to our hotel. We had lunch in cafe Gebraud. It was nice . Then we walked to hotel to rest. In an hour we wanted to go outside .

However there was some kind of commotion outside. We thought this is again foreign dignitaries arriving and departing. Turned out commemoration peaceful event became ugly. I can tell you that our hotel is in the best location beacuse... the auctionis in front it!!! We were lucky beacuse our windows faces square in front of hotel. So we see everything. And we see riot units with rifles at the doorstep, moving to next corner where just tankpassed and protesters throwing Molotov Cocktails. I did not want to miss it and went out to take pictures despite George's protests. I took just few and had to run for cover since protesters threw something which smoked nearby.

The hotel is secure since we have foreign dignitaries from European countries staying there . There are a lot's of security guardsfrom Budapest police and dignitaries personal plain clothes security.Yesterday the dignitaries were going to Opera in their motorcades and staff was rolling and unrolling red carpet for them. Today they rush dignitaries and hotels guests fast in and out.
At 19:00 it is supposed to be a minute of silence but it looks like too much noise with smoke and bullets (it is rubber bullets I hope). Besides police vehicles there was even one tank!
Then there were fireworks but it was kind of strange - fireworks for the event and smoke from the crowd.

I see we are destined to have dinner here again. But we might find out more details so I will write later.

2006 Oct Europe trip - Paris Oct 16 - 20

We left JFK for Paris Oct 15, 5:55pm. Flight was uneventful and on time. Bad airline food as usual. Arrived Paris. First day jetlagged but accomplished a lot.
Taxi from CDG to city with traffic took about 1hr.
Checked into hotel early, went to Tulerie gardens, wonderful, visited Orangerie museum, great collection of impressionists and canvasses of Monet’s work water lilies how he painted them. Had late breakfast in old favorite Angelina tea room. Now found it just OK, we had better croissants in regular patisseries but service was refined.

Walked up to Champs Elysees, came back and decided to swing to Louvre for exploration since we bought museum pass for 2 days. Were not sure how long we will last. But we went there for1.5 hrs, visited Mona Lisa, Winged victory and other biggies. Re: winged victory - found out that the hand of the statue was found in late 90's in Turkey. France asked if they can have it since Winged Victory itself was taken by French from Turkey. So Turkey gave hand and finger :-) - Now in exhibit next to Winged victory.
Walked in Palais Royal - wonderful! We will be back in Louvre on Wed when it is open until 21:45.

Hotel is 5* http://warwickwestminsteropera.com/
but the room is tiny! Good things about this hotel : free broadband internet in the room. Great if you need to work on your computer. Concierge is very good. We took wrong convertor plug and they gave us different plugs until we got what we needed. First one only worked in bath (:-) ) and when we turned off the light for a night, that outlet was turned off and in the morning computer did not recharge. We got a new plug and now computer is charging ok at desk.
Bath is very good, marble. We have nice small balcony. Hotel is a former elegant mansion and is more like 4* SLH then 5* hotel as they advertise. Excellent neighborhood (near place Vendome and Opera).

Cons - very small room and almost no closet space. Good thing we do not have much clothes which need to be on hangers. But the room is not that goood. We had rooms like this in 3* hotels. I guess we will survive. I tried to get larger room but they only offered us jr suite for extra 115 eur per night which we declined.

We were so exhausted after today’s walks that we bought wonderful food and wine and ate in bed! Now a bit of work and early to bed. Did not sleep since yesterday night.

Good news about Paris – no dog poop on the streets! Paris is clean and people are friendly, speak English. George even asked our taxi driver what does he thinks about Americans. The driver – looked like middle eastern said we have done good thing by removing saddam husein. He said some arab drivers will be aggressive toward Americans .

Do not change money in JFK - ripoff. We travel often to Europe so we had 100 eur or so at home and it lasted until this morning and we then changed in Paris exchange. Other solution is to exchange money it CDG.

October 17.
Hotel's breakfast which was not included cost 23 e per person so we found local cafe and had it for 8 eur for 2! Great croissants. The guide Estelle came at 9:30 and we took a metro with her to Marais and had a nice walk in this area of Medieval Paris. We saw some nice mansions and church St. Paul. We also saw Holoucast memorial. We went to Place Vendome with wonderful houses , one of them was where Hugo lived. We also went to synagogue and walked on Rue Rossiers (Jewish area) where we ended our 2 hr tour. We had lunch in kosher deli and spent some more time in the area. Then we walked (long walk ) to D'Orsay museum. The rest of the day was spent there. We had a break in LeRestaurant at museum, it has wonderful painted celings and ambience. After that we walked back to our hotel. We also listened in underpass to museum to a street musician who happened to play our favorite songs of Armstrong and Beatles. We stayed until museum was closing (around 6pm) and walked back to hotel. One the way on place Vendome there was musician playing classical music on the real piano (not keyboard) with looked like expensive rug under piano. Maybe it was sponsored by city since there was some activity in the morning. In any case, we enjoyed this unexpected concert and I just thought: here I am in Paris, in this wonderful square listening to the most beuatiful music of Chopin. Incredible. We walked to hotel, rested and at 7:30pm we had a formal dinner at our hotel's Le Celadon restaurant. This restaurant had 1 Michelin star. Dinner was very good but not extraordinary. We chose wine separately and had special menu. For appetiser we had soft bolied eggs in some crust on a bed of chanterreles. Then we had for main course guinea hen on a bed some champignons which I did not recognized. They had some woodsey flavor. There was also stewed apple . All was nicely presented. We also had some complimentary dishes which I thought was small steak tartare. George did not eat it so I had 2 of them.
Funny thing was that George thought we ordered ginnea pig instead of ginea hen! :-)
I explained to him it is a game dish. I asked him why he did not questioned what was guinea "pig" meant. He said did not want to show his ignorance, maybe it is french delicacy. That was hilarious. Our "guinea pig" was indeed well prepared breast of looked small chicken looked like cornish game hen. For desert we had chocolate panache freshly baked and also some various small desserts that usually come with dinner. Total for 2 was about 130 eur. Not bad.

Both days so far the weather was very good, warm and was sunny on Monday.

October 17 was spent in Musee D'Orsay which we personally love more then Louvre, it is more manageable and we love Impressionists. However after 4 hrs we were completely exhausted. Unlike in Louvre, there are not much possiblity to sit. We had a break in a nice restaurant for coffee at museum but it was very expensive. Ice tea and coffee was about 12 eur. We went to hotel recharge and went shopping to gallerie Lafayette which is near our hotel behind the opera . The shopping in french and famous department store was an experience and it was owherhelming from George so he opened his eyes ... and wallet. Besides shopping, the dome in the building with stained glass is like in churches.

October 18 we walked to Ille de La Cite - where Paris started and visited Notre Dame and St. Chapelle and explored this beautiful island. After that we had lunch in a belgium bistro Au Trapiste I beleive it was called on Rue St. Dennis . I had mussels in white wine and lemon sauce and it was very good and we washed it with Belgian Amlstel Stella Beer. It was a huge plate.
We stralled in the evening in Opera stately boulevards and had dinner in Cafe De La Paix near Opera . The dinner was better then daybefore in Michelin starred Le celadon. We had foie gras and onion soup for starter. I had game duck with potato souffle and braised red cabbage. George had turbot (fish) with potatoes with interesting twist - some lemon, some seeds - we could not figure out exactly, but it was excellent. Chocolate creation PacoRaban Paris - not sure if it has relation to perfume designer but it was good. So it was another fine day.

Did I mention that every day we also managed to work ? :-)
Our hotel has free internet and we check and reply to messages and still do some work on this trip. So business and leisure can mix..

October 19. In the morning we walked to yet another department store Printemps and browsed it , and had breakfast there in the panoramic terrace , took pictures with Eifell tower in background. I never liked to be near Eiffel tower, it is so huge that when you are under it, you do not appreciate it. Years ago we paid for expensive restaurant Jules Verne just to be in Eiffel tower but the food was not impressive. Now we found out it is better to see it from outside and terrace in Printemps is very good location to view it and take pictures.

In the afternoon we had a tour with a great guide which I often book for my clients, Jean Manuel Traimond.
http://emcoinc.com/travel/html/Europe/ParisJeanManuel.htm
He is terrific and has dynamic personality, you never get bored on his tours. We opted for his Naughty Louvre tour. If you are interested in details, email me directly :-)
Jean Manuel also wrote a book "Guide Erotique du LoLouvre". It was sold in Louvre's store unfrotunately only in French but since it has all pictures of statues and paintings we saw to remind us, we bought it anyway. Jean Manuel signed it for us.
Jean Manuel found some incorrect facts in Da Vinci book, for example, number of tile in Louvre pyramid. He counted them himself 674 tiles on pyramid. Dan Brown says 666 which is number of devil. Interesting...

After tour, we went to Palais Royal and rested in the park and went home. We had early dinner in Louvre's caroussel in food court. Nothing special. Rested at hotel and went for tea and desert at night. We happened to stop ia small cafe where musician was playing piano. When he heard we are Americans, he played for us "New York, New York" and Hershwin and some song which was sung by Tony Bennet. Everybody applauded. We also told him we were originally from Russia (some other Russian tourist sat at next table), so he played Russian melodies as well. That was a good evening. Dessert was tea and tart tatin (apple) and some rice pudding with raisins and vanilla. Very good. Good service .

October 20th was some takeout from local patisserie for breakfast in room (suffered in small room cramped space). Lunch was with my business partner in Paris in Chez Clemente. We ate in bistro Chez Clemente. Regular chain bistro but food oh so good. http://www.chezclement.com/anglais/index.php
We checked out late but still was time until our flight 8:20pm. So concierge kept our bags and went to Opera (for a tour during the day). We wanted to see Chagal's painted ceiling but unfortunately there was rehearsal in opera and auditorium was closed. So we just saw the rest. Imposing building.

We came back to hotel and ordered taxi and left for Orly airport, 30 eur.

Goodbye Paris! I hope Budapest will not dissapoint.

2006 European trip - packing challenge

We are off to Europe Oct 15. Will visit Paris, fly to Budapest, train to Vienna, car to Czech Republic driving through Cesky Krymlov and Karlovy Vary - spa town), ending in Prague, drop off the car , train to Dresden and Berlin Germany.
This is going to be 24 days trip and we are trying to fit into 2 small suitcases and 2 carryons (laptop, phones, some work and books for reading on the plane). Will have to utilize hotel's laundry and wash some clothes overnight. It is mix of business and leisure so we need decent clothes and trying to look like Europeans (well'be used to be them!). We have tickets to 3 Opera performances so need suit (George wears on the flight) and theater dress, We will soak in European thermal springs so we need swimwear. Will need some space for souvenirs. Do not want heavy suitcases to drag in trains. It is warm in Paris now but in November could be snow in Germany.. It is a challenge to pack light.

This blog is posted in chronological order so if you follow our trip, start from this post - packing challenge and read newer posts.
